These days, many natural remedies for depression are being used more and more often. People are very interested in learning about natural ways to treat depression.

St. John’s Wort

There is a nonprofit company called “The Cochrane Collaboration” which has compiled existing medical and scientific information so that people can make health care choices that are informed by the facts. This company published a study of the existing data in 2008 which stated that when extracts of Hypericum, which is St. John’s Wort, were used in a trial they actually worked better than placebos when it came to treating severe depression. In addition, it was shown to be just as effective, with less side effects, than the usual medications [1].

The National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine carried out another study which discovered that St. Johnís Wort was actually not any better for moderate depression but that it was helpful in treating milder depression [2]. As a matter of fact, St. John’s Wort has been used for many centuries to treat depression. Although it has not been approved for use in the USA by the FDA, it is very commonly used in Europe.

But keep in mind that even though it is a very common natural-based cure for moderate to mild depression, it might interact with some of the usual antidepressants and some of the drugs that are used to treat HIV/AIDS and the rejection of transplant organs. But among its users, many say that it is very effective.

SAMe (S-Adenosyl Methionine)

SAMe is readily available in Europe by getting a prescription for an antidepressant. It is also used as a diet supplement in the United States. Omega-3 Fatty Acids

These are otherwise known as essential fatty acids because they are essential to your diet and your body is not able to synthesize them. These fatty acids come from oily fish such as salmon, mackerel and sardines, some plants and some nuts. It has been shown through tests that people who are low on Omega-3 fatty acids are more likely to be depressed than those whose intake is good [4].

There is also research that suggests that Omega-3 fatty acids might help depression during the perinatal time which is the time just after and just before pregnancy [5]. In these cases, Omega-3 supplements need to have a minimum of 60% EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) [6].

There are ways to naturally fight depression but these methods are not replacements for good medical care.
