Natural Remedies To Help Counter Phobias

Phobias are an irrational fear. Symptoms of phobia may be so severe that they are debilitating and cause a disruption of everyday life. Currently, it is estimated that at least 10 percent of people in the UK and more than 10 percent of the U.S. Population, suffer from phobias. There are many great alternative health care remedies like homeopathy and aromatherapy that can help to reduce phobias.

Typical phobias include being claustrophobic or afraid of enclosed spaces, agoraphobic or afraid of open spaces, fear of heights or acrophobia. Many phobias are related to objects, situations, and even a person. If you’ve had an unpleasant experience you’re much more likely to have a phobia about that particular situation, person or object. The symptoms may range from a mild panic to terror. You may struggle to refocus your thoughts and feel like you need to flee the situation. You may have severe trembling or mild trembling. You may feel the flight or fight response. You may feel dizzy. All of these are typical reactions for a phobia.

Homeopathy In Phobias

Homeopathy offers hope and help for many phobias. Qualified homeopaths will design a specific treatment protocol for your specific phobia. These treatments may include any of the following:

Argentum Nitricum or Nitrate of Silver. This may be given for fear of heights or general confusion and anxiety.

Phosphorus is suggested for a fear of the dark or being alone.

Gelsemium is ideal for someone who is feeling weak-kneed or has a fear of any public performance.

Aconite may be used for a fear of death or when the mind is paralyzed in fear.

Arnica is ideal for relieving stress that is brought on by an injury or an accident.

Flower Essences

These are another form of treatment and work well for many. They help to bring balance back to the mind and soul. The treatments will vary according to the mental state of the person. They may include:

The stimulus for such things as fear of being late to work, fear of flying or fear of spiders.

Aspen is ideal for any unspecified fear or something that is vague or general anxiety.

Red Chestnut is ideal for those who are concerned about others safety and happiness.

Rock Rose is ideal for fears that turn into terror or a panic attack.

Agrimony is ideal for those who are anxious and worry frequently. Especially if they try to hide this by making fun of things often.

Aromatherapy

Essential oils have long been touted as useful for phobias. They help to reduce tension and induce a calm feeling. They can be used in a bath, in a message or even in a vaporizer or carrier oil. Many oils to consider are bergamot, chamomile, jasmine, geranium, lavender, melissa, marjoram and ylang-ylang.

It’s vital to seek out the advice of a professional before simply treating phobias. Even minor symptoms can be hiding a serious underlying condition.

Natural Joint Pain Cures Provide Pain Relief With No Side Effects

Joint pain is very frustrating and uncomfortable, especially for individuals who have lead an active life.  To relieve their pain, many people searching for remedies turn to prescription drugs such as non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs like Aleve, acetaminophen (Tylenol) or COX-2 inhibitors (e.g. Vioxx and Celebrex).  Although these drugs do provide some immediate relief, they also have problems associated with them (one example is the class actions suits regarding Vioxx).  The leading cause for patients being admitted to the hospital for liver failure is Tylenol.  Also note that none of these so-called remedies address joint pain’s underlying causes.

I started to hear about glucosamine sulfate from veterinarians long ago, well before the medical establishment started to take notice.  It helps dogs- and humans too- with the infirmity, stiffness and pain of arthritis.  Nearly all dogs suffer from arthritis eventually, and larger dogs often suffer from hip dysplasia, a painful joint condition, so using glucosamine isn’t just a theoretical concept in veterinary practice.  With dogs, there aren’t any placebo effects.  They don’t start feeling better because they are thinking they are supposed to- they either act and feel like they are better or they don’t if their condition doesn’t improve.

Glucosamine is synthesized naturally in the human body.  It is one of the basic building blocks of cartilage in your knees and other connective tissues.  Although we have plenty of it when we are young, when we start to the age we do lose some, which can lead to cartilage thinning and often will progress to become osteoarthritis.  Glucosamine sulfate, MSM, and chondroitin sulfate all can help.

There have been many studies that show that glucosamine or chondroitin (or both) can help to repair joint damage that is caused by osteoarthritis.  Although it isn’t able to bring any cartilage back, what it can do is reduce symptoms or noise, stiffness, swelling and pain in the joints and prevent further loss of cartilage.  In two 3-year randomized and independent placebo-controlled studies, it was shown that glucosamine slows the progression of symptoms of osteoarthritis.  After a period of three years, participants who had taken glucosamine sulfate did not show any signs of joint space narrowing.  The group taking glucosamine sulfate, had significantly improved WOMAC index (standardized measurement of pain).  There was a trend in the placebo group for worsening pain.

Another one of the building blocks for connective tissue is chondroitin sulfate.  It stimulates cells in the cartilage (chondrocytes) and works very well in combination with glucosamine for speeding up recovery and regeneration of bone tissues.  Chondroitin sulfate is easy to absorb and only causes minor side effects.  It can also reduce pain and slow down cartilage loss for individuals who have osteoarthritis.  It was reported at the Annual Scientific Meeting of American College of Rheumatology in November 2005 that the combination of chondroitin sulfate and glucosamine are at least as effective as Celebrex (celecoxib), which is a prescription drug for treating pain that is caused by severe or moderate osteoarthritis in the knee.  Use them together for best results.

Methyl-sulfonyl-methane (MSM) is great for joint pain.  The main reason for this is due to its high sulfur contact (No wonder so many people around the world seek out hot sulfur baths to relieve their pain).  MSM blocks the transmitting of impulse to the nerve fibers carrying pain signals.  Laboratory animals studies have shown that those with MSM in their diet saw less degenerative changes in their articular joints than those in the control group.  In June 2004, Clinical Drug Investigations journal published reports from scientists that showed that although MSM and glucosamine individually did improve swelling and pain in arthritic joints, that the combination of them was more effective in improving joint function and reducing symptoms.

Arthritis is the number one disability in America.  As the baby boomers continue to age, joint pain will likely become even more prevalent than it already is.  Natural remedies such as MSM, chondroitin, and glucosamine can empower us to get our health back under control and make significant contributions to our well-being.  The best news of all is that they don’t cause any harmful side effects, which is what a natural cure is supposed to do.

Natural Cures For Depression: How To Treat Depression Naturally

These days, many natural remedies for depression are being used more and more often. People are very interested in learning about natural ways to treat depression.

Depression is sometimes called the silent killer. That is because the illness is not just about feeling a little blue but it is actually a serious mental illness.
People who suffer from depression often feel anxious, helpless, hopeless, restless and sad and do not want to be out among people. They may have the symptoms of insomnia, aches and pains, fatigue and more and the normal medicines will not help.

There are types of depression that are not so much a psychiatric problem than a reaction to circumstances that have happened in their lives such as a big disappointment or bereavement. It may also occur following certain illnesses.

Worldwide, it is a very common mental health illness with sometimes 20% of people in developed countries suffering from depression during their lifetime.

Frequently, depression is treated with medication, electroconvulsive shock therapy and psychotherapy but people who have the milder forms of the disease are finding that they prefer more natural choices. Even in the case of serious depression, some people are able to be treated with natural remedies ñ even though there are differing opinions as to its efficacy.

Natural Cures for Depression

The two most important cures for depression that are natural include SAMe (S-Adenosyl methionine) and St. John’s Wort. In addition, there are some who suggest that Omega-3 fatty acids can be another alternative. It should be noted that each of these treatments, which are talked about below, are not yet accepted alternatives to medical help but they do seem to work for certain people.

St. John’s Wort

There is a nonprofit company called “The Cochrane Collaboration” which has compiled existing medical and scientific information so that people can make health care choices that are informed by the facts. This company published a study of the existing data in 2008 which stated that when extracts of Hypericum, which is St. John’s Wort, were used in a trial they actually worked better than placebos when it came to treating severe depression. In addition, it was shown to be just as effective, with less side effects, than the usual medications [1].

The National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine carried out another study which discovered that St. Johnís Wort was actually not any better for moderate depression but that it was helpful in treating milder depression [2]. As a matter of fact, St. John’s Wort has been used for many centuries to treat depression. Although it has not been approved for use in the USA by the FDA, it is very commonly used in Europe.

But keep in mind that even though it is a very common natural-based cure for moderate to mild depression, it might interact with some of the usual antidepressants and some of the drugs that are used to treat HIV/AIDS and the rejection of transplant organs. But among its users, many say that it is very effective.

SAMe (S-Adenosyl Methionine)

SAMe is readily available in Europe by getting a prescription for an antidepressant. It is also used as a diet supplement in the United States. There have been several trials that show it is effective in the treatment of severe depression [3]. That is because this chemical is actually found naturally in the body and so this is really a natural cure for depression. But, because no one is able to actually extract it from the body, it has to be synthetically manufactured to be used in treating depression.

Omega-3 Fatty Acids

Omega-3 fatty acids are known to improve the function of the brain and they also offer numerous other benefits for health. One of these benefits is the way they are able to affect bipolar disorder, depression and other ailments. These are otherwise known as essential fatty acids because they are essential to your diet and your body is not able to synthesize them. These fatty acids come from oily fish such as salmon, mackerel and sardines, some plants and some nuts. It has been shown through tests that people who are low on Omega-3 fatty acids are more likely to be depressed than those whose intake is good [4].

There is also research that suggests that Omega-3 fatty acids might help depression during the perinatal time which is the time just after and just before pregnancy [5]. In these cases, Omega-3 supplements need to have a minimum of 60% EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) [6].

There are ways to naturally fight depression but these methods are not replacements for good medical care. If you are now under treatment for depression, you should check with your doctor before you try any of the natural remedies. If you are depressed but there is no treatment available for you, you might try one of these natural treatments.

In many cases, people have found that their lives have become manageable and they have been able to go back out into society and do activities they previously enjoyed before they were depressed by using these remedies. But make sure you have checked on possible drug interactions and have checked with your doctor before you begin using these medications.
